The Great Hunger - A Tale of Irish Perseverance

At the dawn of the 19th century, Ireland experienced a dramatic population expansion thanks to a revolutionary crop: the humble potato. But in 1845, the blight arrived, unleashing utter devastation across the island. The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mór) immerses you in this historic struggle for human resilience. Players represent families of tenant farmers who, faced with famine, disease, and harsh British economic policies, must do whatever it takes to save their people.

A Narrative Journey Driven by Dual-Sided Cards

The gameplay shifts dramatically as history unfolds. Initially, you use the top half of your Event cards to prosper and expand your family across the map. Once the blight strikes, the game transitions into a scramble for survival. You must then pivot to the bottom half of your cards to secure aid, find employment on English Estates, or rush to ports to catch passage on infamous coffin ships bound for America.

An Accessible and Deep Historical Simulation

With a complexity rating of 3 out of 10, this title offers a smooth, accessible simulation without sacrificing thematic depth. The strategic area scale (one county per area) and the management of population movement between Ireland and the US provide a poignant tactical challenge, perfect for history buffs and fans of narrative-driven board games.
