Trying Men's Souls: The Campaign for New York, August-October 1776

In early 1776, following the British defeat at Bunker Hill, their evacuation of Boston, and the humiliating defeat of the American invasion of Canada, King George III convinced hardliners in Parliament to raise a massive army and fleet. In August 1776, a month after the colonies declared their independence, a British fleet of over 400 ships (including 30 to 73 warships) arrived in New York harbor to unleash over 32,000 men onto Staten Island and Long Island. Opposing them was the largest American army ever assembled, with 23,000 men under the command of General George Washington, starting the largest campaign of the Revolutionary War.

Washington's Bold Gamble

Hoping to replicate what happened in Boston on a larger scale, Washington took a gamble by defending Gowanus Heights, fortifying Brooklyn, and constructing numerous obstructions in the Hudson and East Rivers. He hoped the British would incur such high losses that an assault on Manhattan would be impossible. However, the British made great use of the many local loyalists’ knowledge and sentiments to bring the rebels to heel.

An Asymmetric Strategic Duel

This moderate complexity simulation wargame casts players as Generals Washington and Howe commanding their forces for control of the colonies' largest city and port:

For the American Player: This game will indeed try your soul. You must transition from a static defense in depth to a more mobile fight, matching defiant stands with bold counter-attacks.
For the British Player: You hold a preponderance of force but will need a delicate blend of activation among your commands to keep the Americans off balance while pressing the attack. Deft use of the Royal Navy around the American forts can open up key opportunities along the rivers.
