Thunderbolt: Hannibal’s War with Rome

Thunderbolt expands The Ancient World system to the mammoth scale of the 2nd Punic War. This title represents the final design of the illustrious Richard H. Berg, completed by Mark Herman and Alan Ray. It offers an unparalleled simulation of the Western Mediterranean conflict across 16 years of historical drama.

Dynamic Leadership & Command

The game utilizes a chit-pull mechanic that emphasizes the importance of historical commanders:

Attrition over Movement : Instead of standard movement allowances, operations are governed by a leader's ability to sustain forces and manage attrition.
Deep Tactical Combat : Battles account for cavalry superiority, elite status, and leadership modifiers, featuring an "Unpredictable Result" that can shatter even the best-laid plans.
Political Framework : Manage the Roman hierarchy of Consuls and Dictators assigned by the Senate, or navigate the shifting Carthaginian family politics to determine your military budget and theater of operations.

Features and Scenarios

New to the system are the Celtic and Iberian tribes (over 20 distinct groups), which can be allied through diplomacy, pacified by force, or used as mercenaries.

Grand Campaign : The entire 2nd Punic War played on 3 full-size maps over 16 Game Turns.
Focused Scenarios : 7 smaller scenarios (most on a single map) including Hannibal’s Invasion of Italy, Scipio’s strike in Spain, and the African Campaign.
Siege & Naval Rules : Detailed rules for treachery, surrender, and naval superiority to streamline Mediterranean maneuvers.
