Eagles of Rome: War in the Late Republic & Early Empire examines the Roman army of the early empire (31 BC – AD 193), whose origins trace back to the late 2nd century BC and the reforms of Gaius Marius during the final years of the Republic. This issue provides an in-depth analysis of that military system and four of the most pivotal battles of the era.
Additional Feature Articles:
- Gettysburg, Day 2 – Since the end of the American Civil War, historians have debated whether Generals Daniel Sickles and James Longstreet were responsible for key mistakes and missed opportunities on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. We analyze the actions and controversial reputations of both commanders.
- Wake Island, 1941: “Enemy on Island, Issue in Doubt” – Recognized for its strategic importance well before the Pacific War, Wake Island was transferred to US Navy control in 1934. The Japanese saw it as an ideal observation post, refueling station, and a vital link in their expanding empire’s defensive perimeter. This article examines the fierce battle fought from 8 to 23 December 1941.
- Beirut 1982: Urban Guerilla War – The Lebanese conflict from 1975 to 1984 was the longest and deadliest war in the Middle East prior to the present-day Gaza conflict. We analyze the strategies, tactics, and weapons involved, while dispelling myths and clarifying misconceptions surrounding the siege of Beirut.
Eagles of Rome is a grand tactical two-player wargame system covering battles from the Roman Republic through the Empire and into the early Byzantine era. The Caesar module focuses on battles of the Late Republic to the Early Empire (approximately 120 BC to AD 250). Players command armies ranging from disciplined Roman legions to massive barbarian forces, with distinctions between melee and missile combat, plus special tactics. Morale plays a critical role.
Caesar is played through historical scenarios. Each scenario represents a specific battle and is governed by three rules sections:
- Standard Rules – Common to all games in the series.
- Optional Rules – For additional depth, used at the players’ discretion.
- Scenario Rules – Specific to each historical engagement.
Each hex on the map represents 100–200 meters, depending on the battle. A game turn covers 15–45 minutes of real time, depending on combat intensity. Units depict three to five Roman cohorts or equivalent formations (about 1,000–3,000 men, depending on the period and army efficiency), while leaders represent notable commanders, war chiefs, or the staff of a legion or similar formation.
Game Components:
- One 22" x 34" game map
- 176 die-cut 5/8" counters
