Eastern Front, Summer 1944: BAGRATION - Halting the Soviet Juggernaut

This attack annihilated a large section of the German Army, driving Soviet forces to the outskirts of Warsaw and the Vistula River. The game captures the critical moment when General Model rallies fragmented German forces and launches counterattacks to temporarily halt the relentless Soviet advance.

The scenario includes the Warsaw Uprising and the establishment of a dangerous Soviet bridgehead across the Vistula at Magnuszew.

Game Mechanics and Scope

Complexity: Rated 2 out of 5, making it highly accessible for a wargame.
Duration: An average game takes approximately 4–5 hours.
Scale: The game lasts ten turns, with each turn representing one day of real time. Each hex spans about two kilometers. Units primarily range from brigades to battalions, mostly armored, mechanized, or motorized.

Description of Play

The initial setup favors the Soviets, as the German player starts with very few deployed units. Over the first three turns, Soviet armored forces flood the map while German armored divisions slowly arrive for the crucial counterattack. The game system highlights the doctrinal differences between the armies:

Operational Differences: Soviet forces are powerful but rigid, whereas German forces are flexible but consist of a wider variety of units.
Key Rules: Rules cover artillery bombardments, Stuka air support, Kampfgruppe formations, overrun and conventional attacks, the Warsaw uprising, and the intervention of General Model (represented by a dedicated counter).
Event Cards: Both players use various Event Cards (like Panzerfaust, Battlefield Tank Recovery, Bloody Battle, and more) to influence the game, ensuring strategic unpredictability.
