What are the differences between board games and tabletop games?
Who hasn't had fun playing a board game? Timeless, it has captured generations of players who never stop playing, taking as much pleasure in bringing out board games from their childhood as in discovering new ones. The earliest board games likely emerged during Antiquity, with games like Mehen or Senet in Egypt discovered during archaeological excavations. Among the greatest board games of the modern era, we can mention Chess or Snakes and Ladders, which from the 17th century onwards established themselves in wealthier households. The world of board games has evolved and has been experiencing a revival in recent years, with creators competing in inspiration. But what exactly is a board game? A board game is a specific type of tabletop game played by multiple players. It includes games that have become iconic today. However, it differs from what we refer to today as "tabletop board games," where matches take place on a board that symbolizes the environment in which the game unfolds. The visual design work of the creators plays an important role so that players feel immersed in a specific universe. In this regard, tabletop board games can be closely compared to role-playing games.
Which board games have become iconic?
Board games are so popular that they can be found in many retail stores, unlike specialized tabletop games, which are mainly available in specialty game shops like Agorajeux. Of course, famous classics like Monopoly or Payday quickly earned their place as popular family games. However, in the early 2000s, more complex and now widely distributed games made their appearance. These notably include cooperative games and deck-building games. For instance, Dominion was the first deck-building game, while Pandemic and Arkham Horror launched the cooperative game trend. We certainly must mention the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons as well as the first Dungeon Crawler, HeroQuest! As for legendary card games, let's name the famous Magic, which pioneered the collectible card game system.
