1979: Revolution in Iran: The Destiny of a Nation

1979: Revolution in Iran is a grand-scale strategic wargame covering the tumultuous period between the 1953 coup and the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Unlike many other titles covering this era, this game focuses on the Iranian people and their political landscape, rather than reducing them to mere pawns in a US-USSR Cold War proxy conflict.

Innovative Gameplay Mechanics

The game features a unique take on the card-driven genre:

Drafting System: Unlike most card-driven games, each turn begins with a draft of event cards. This ensures that both sides have equal access to strategic opportunities, preventing imbalance.
Factional Influence: This is your primary resource. Spend it to trigger events, take tactical actions, and, most importantly, build opposition (or enforce control) among the various segments of society.
Constant Tension: Scoring is hidden from view throughout the game, ensuring that the pressure remains high from the very first turn to the final resolution.

Two Opposing Visions

The Coalition: Your goal is to nationalize the oil industry, build a powerful opposition, and ultimately remove the Shah from power.
The Royalists: You must keep Mohammed Reza Pahlavi on the throne and protect American and British oil interests. You must balance the use of the secret police (SAVAK) and reliance on foreign aid without alienating the populace.

Key Features

Iranian-Centric Perspective: A rare hobby-game where Iranians actively control the events rather than being a sideshow to Cold War politics.
Strategic Depth: Succeed by manipulating a multitude of factions, from the merchants of the bazaar to the powerful mullahs.
Educational Value: Includes a detailed history booklet providing an overview of the events, cards, and context of Iran's turbulent decades.
Perfect Balance: The card-drafting mechanism removes the "bad hand" frustration, rewarding pure tactical decision-making.
