Year of the Rat: The Campaign That Shaped History

This game recreates the decisive 1972 Easter Offensive, where the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), surprised but resilient, fought to repulse the invading NVA divisions with the essential support of American airpower.

A Rich Asymmetric Wargame

The gameplay features contrasting mechanics for both sides:

  • NVA Forces: Operate powerful divisions alongside Viet Cong regiments and decoys. Success depends on striking quickly while navigating worsening supply capabilities.
  • ARVN Forces: Deploy elite airborne, ranger, and marine units to hold strategic bastions and counter infiltration, supported by the increasing intensity of US airstrikes.

A Major Historical Update

Far more than a simple reprint of the acclaimed SPI design, this edition incorporates half a century of analysis:

  • Expanded Scope: Includes Australian, Royal Thai, Cambodian, and Khmer Rouge forces, as well as Vietnamese and US Navy riverine units.
  • Technical Realism: Updated orders of battle (featuring the full 1971–72 US force structure), NVA divisional reorganization, and tank regiments.
  • Strategic Variety: Three scenarios and fifteen order of battle variants allow for operations into Laos and Cambodia.

Key Features

  • Premium Components: Completely refreshed artwork with enlarged maps and counters for modern playability.
  • Strategic Depth: Extensive optional rules allow you to tailor the complexity and simulation level to your group.
  • Historical Accuracy: Built on decades of research, providing a comprehensive look at the forces involved in one of the war's most critical periods.
