The Kaiser’s High Seas Fleet – Command the Dreadnoughts of World War I

Overview

“He was the only man on either side who could lose the war in an afternoon.” – Winston Churchill, speaking of Commander of the Grand Fleet John Jellicoe.

The Kaiser’s High Seas Fleet is a simple strategy game inspired by John Edwards’ classic War at Sea (1975). While veteran players will recognize familiar mechanics, this game reflects the unique challenges of World War I naval warfare. One player commands the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey), while the other leads the Entente Powers (Great Britain, France, Italy, Russia, and eventually the United States). Portugal and Greece act as neutral powers, providing docking and limited ship repair for the Entente.

Gameplay

Players maneuver and fight the main ships of the era, the Dreadnoughts, seeking control of key ocean areas to earn victory points. The U-Boat campaign is represented through U-Boat counters placed in ocean zones, reflecting the threat to Entente merchant shipping. The combat model improves upon the original War at Sea system, highlighting that even in major battles like Jutland, very few Dreadnoughts were actually sunk.

Pre-Dreadnoughts are included for each navy, but their effectiveness is limited, reflecting their obsolescence at the start of the war. The game features a detailed map by Knut Grünitz and colorful new Dreadnought counters for seven major powers.
