France, 1914-1918. The Western Front turns into an unprecedented battle of endurance and deception. In Fields of Despair, take control of either the Allies or the Central Powers in a conflict where military prowess alone won't suffice. You must manage a declining economy, pioneer deadly technologies, and outmaneuver your opponent behind a thick wall of uncertainty. Will your deception hold, or will your lines crumble?
Fields of Despair transforms traditional block mechanics: instead of standard 1-4 values, blocks range from 0 to 20. A single block can represent a massive strike force or a complete bluff. Through Strategic Reorganization and free-flowing movement, players can split, combine, or move deception blocks secretly. Troops remain hidden even in shared hexes until air reconnaissance or an "over the top" infantry assault reveals their true strength. Combat emphasizes artillery allocation, letting you wage attritional trench warfare or push for a bloody breakthrough.
