Small Wars : Mohicans

Référence : AD202401

Small Wars: Mohicans is the inaugural title in the Small Wars series, a game of asymmetric warfare set during the French and Indian War (1754–1760), the North American theater of the global Seven Years’ War. Based on the acclaimed 1983 Canadian boardgame Mohawk by Aulic Council Publishing Co., Mohicans brings a fresh and dynamic take on this pivotal conflict.

At the heart of the game is the struggle between British regular forces and the combined regular, militia, and irregular troops of the French and their Indigenous allies. British forces boast greater firepower and numbers, supported by yearly reinforcements from Europe. However, their supply lines are vulnerable, and their conventional European tactics are ill-suited to the harsh and forested wilderness of eastern North America.

In contrast, the French leverage superior mobility and deep alliances with Indigenous nations, notably making use of elite units such as the coureurs des bois. Native warriors excel in ambushes, raids, and guerrilla warfare — the so-called "petty war" that defined the frontier. From woodland ambushes and field battles to town raids and fort assaults, combat unfolds across a thousand-mile front of unforgiving terrain.

A central dynamic of the game is the role of the powerful but initially neutral Iroquois Confederacy. Both players seek to sway the six nations of the Confederacy to their side. Each significant victory in battle may gain the allegiance of one tribe. Win over all six, and the Iroquois will enter the war — a potentially game-changing alliance.

Victory conditions reflect the historical stakes. The British must capture and hold three of the following French strongholds: Louisbourg, Frontenac, Duquesne, Montreal, or Quebec — with at least one of the latter two. Failing to achieve this by 1760 results in a French victory. Conversely, the French can win by taking Albany and either New York, Boston, or Philadelphia — a daunting challenge, but not impossible with the right timing and tactics.

Each year plays out through seasonal phases, culminating in Winter, during which players receive reinforcements, muster militias and Indigenous allies, and build or reinforce forts. Battles occur after each movement phase and cover various types of engagements — from traditional field combat to surprise attacks and fort sieges.

The fate of North America hangs in the balance. Will superior numbers and firepower prevail, or will mastery of the wilderness and diplomacy with the First Nations turn the tide?

Win the small wars. Claim the continent.
