On the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862, Confederate forces led by General Albert Sidney Johnston launched a surprise attack against Union troops commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. The Confederates initially pushed back the Union lines, inflicting heavy casualties. However, despite their initial success, the Union forces entrenched themselves around an area known as the "Hornet's Nest." By the end of the day, Union reinforcements were arriving, and the situation remained uncertain, setting the stage for the counterattack the following day.

Shiloh: The First Day game system is from Revolution Games' popular Blind Swords series that utilizes a chit-pull mechanic emphasizing the three "FOW's" of military conflict: Fog of War, Friction of War, and Fortunes of War.
