The Four Battles:
Big Bethel – June 10, 1861: Early in the war, Union forces under Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler launched a confused assault on a Confederate position along Wythe Creek. After a devastating friendly fire incident and a poorly executed plan, the Union attack was repelled by Confederate forces under "Prince" John B. Magruder.
Mill Springs – January 19, 1862: A key winter engagement in Kentucky. Confederate leaders George B. Crittenden and Felix Zollicoffer attempted to strike Union forces under Brig. Gen. George H. Thomas. Despite initial momentum, the Confederate assault faltered following Zollicoffer’s death, and the Union counterattack forced a retreat across the Cumberland River.
New Bern – March 14, 1862: As part of a Union push in the Carolinas, Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside led a successful amphibious operation against Confederate forces led by Lawrence O’Brien Branch. A foggy morning assault uncovered a weak point in the Rebel line, leading to a Union breakthrough and Confederate retreat inland.
Rappahannock Station – November 7, 1863: After Gettysburg, Lee’s army attempted to hold the Rappahannock line. In a daring evening assault, Union forces under Gen. Russell captured a heavily fortified position and cut off a Confederate brigade, securing the area and preventing their withdrawal.
