The second volume in the series, FF:29, highlights the US 29th Infantry Division, also known as “Blue and Gray,” and their operations from post-D-Day June 1944 to the end of that year. Players will experience the pivotal battles in which this division fought, emphasizing its order of battle and combat characteristics.

Game Flow:

In each scenario, one player commands the featured US 29th Infantry Division while the other controls the opposing forces. Players alternate giving orders, activating units on the map for various military functions. Victory is determined by achieving scenario-specific objectives, which may include the destruction of enemy units, securing key map objectives, or exiting friendly units from the opponent’s map edge.

Orders & Initiative:

The game is played in a fluid, impulse-driven mechanic, not a strict Igo-Yougo format. Each turn consists of ten orders, and the active player spends initiative points to issue orders and activate units. The game has a pool of 40 initiative points, which players spend to issue orders and activate units. The player with the most initiative at the end of an order gives the next order, while the opponent can react with opportunity or reactive fire.

Assets:

While not card-driven, FF:29 includes Asset cards that offer players additional abilities such as air support, artillery, smoke, and man-portable weapons. These assets can either replace a standard order or allow reactionary capabilities during play.

Special Rules:

FF:29 is a standalone game but shares the core mechanics of the Fighting Formations series. The playbook introduces specific rules for terrain, fortifications, and unit actions that accurately depict tactical warfare in France, Holland, and Germany during this period.

Game Scale:

  • Time Scale: 5 minutes per turn
  • Map Scale: 75 meters per hex
  • Unit Scale: Platoons and squads
  • Players: 1-2

Components:

  • Three 22" x 34" backprinted maps
  • Four 17” x 22” backprinted maps
  • Six die-cut countersheets
  • Two 8.5" x 11" player aid cards
  • 55 playing cards
  • One 2-sided track display
  • One 28-page series rulebook
  • One 28-page playbook
  • One 28-page scenarios booklet
  • One 24-page examples of play booklet
  • 10 dice
  • 10 wooden cubes
  • One wooden pawn

With its blend of tactical decision-making, historical immersion, and variable gameplay, FF:29 provides an exciting and realistic depiction of WWII combat at the squad and platoon levels. Whether you’re a wargame veteran or new to tactical games, Fighting Formations: FF:29 offers a challenging and rewarding experience.
