The ASL Companion: The Definitive ASL Encyclopedia Magazine

The ASL Companion is a new publication from Le Franc Tireur, focusing exclusively on an in-depth reading of the *Advanced Squad Leader* (ASL) universe. It is authored by none other than Jim Stahler, one of John Hill’s associates who participated in the creation of *Squad Leader* and its transition to ASL.

Content and Scope

Each magazine is 100 pages long. This series is based on a massive, unpublished encyclopedia on SL / ASL written by Jim Stahler. The initiative ensures this major work does not disappear with its illustrious author, who is 77 years old.

The content is rich, illustrated by Le Franc Tireur, and covers:

• Detailed explanations of the rules.
• The history of the ASL system.
• Design, anecdotes, and the "why" behind specific rules.

Series Structure and Publication

The complete work is divided into 90 chapters grouped into twelve parts, as detailed in the Comprehensive Table of Contents.

• Each magazine contains 2 to 3 chapters.
• The series is expected to run for approximately 35 issues (with a goal of publishing one per quarter, covering about 8 years of work).
• Depending on the results of the first two issues (the first publishing next week, the second in March 2026), the publication run could be 35 more issues—or none at all.
• In theory, the publisher expects to release between 2 and 4 magazines per year.

Content of Issue #1: Part I – The Many Facets of ASL

Issue #1 features Chapters 1 and 2:

• Chapter 1: Welcome to Advanced Squad Leader – This chapter introduces the reader to ASL and discusses the history of the *Squad Leader* and ASL game systems.
• Chapter 2: Warriors and Weapons.

These chapters form Part I, “The Many Facets of ASL”.
